References
Oftentimes
business owners ask for references in process of doing their due
diligence prior to establishing a business relationship. Most of the
time they ask
simply because
they are asked for references by their customers, but getting references
from an unknown company is not the best way to check out a company.
We recommend that you
consider the following steps for all companies with which you are considering
establishing a business relationship.
-
Check
out the company with the Better Business Bureau.
Remember companies cannot influence the BBB report on their
business, so it is a good place to eliminate businesses that have bad
records locally as well as nationally.

Because companies doing business outside their local area
were able to hide their records in the past, these companies hurt many
businesses as well as individuals. Due to advances in technology, today BBB
offices have the ability to flag these companies in local searches. If the company is not a member of your
bureau, then the screen will show the name and address of the business
as well as a link to their BBB report in their home area - even if they
are not members.
- The best thing that has happened to companies doing
due diligence is access to the web. What used to take months 20 years
ago now takes literally seconds. Links to some of the most popular search engines are
below:

Just select one of them and type in the name (and all
variations) of the company as well as the owner(s) of the company.
